Pretty Lights + Graffiti

Pretty Lights, an electro, hip hop and funk one-man-band, has just announced that he will be creating a score for an independent film about graffiti called Graffiti Fine Art. Derek Vincent Smith, the genius behind Pretty Lights is not doing the entire album, but he is using songs from his own record label as well.

Yes, this one man not only gives his music away for free, but also is lined up for a plethora of music festivals this summer, opened up his own record label and is now in charge of a film score.

The short documentary showcases a two year observation of the Sao Paulo graffiti scene.
Jared Levy, the primary film maker, posted an extended preview and some background info on the film.

"In that two year time frame I have learned a great deal about Brazil, São Paulo, the local graffiti scene as well as graffiti on an international level. I have traveled across Brazil, to my hometown of NYC and as far as the Middle East to film famous artists spend a few hours painting a wall."

So what exactly is going down? 65 artists from 13 different countries came to Brazil to paint the walls of the MuBE museum. They all came eight days prior to the exhibits premier, a very short time to paint masterpieces.

Nice Produce is one of the only places you can find super high quality pictures of some (not all) of the art shown at the museum.

Can't wait to buy this film!

The New & Filthy Genre: Dubstep

“Oh dubstep, my love for you is both love and both hate.”

I love you because:

1. Every (good) song is epic.

2. You bring a new meaning to mash-ups and re-create songs rather than reiterate them.

3. Drops will always get you stoked.

4. The songs just make you wanna dance!

I hate you because:

1. Sometimes I don’t understand the overlapping beats.

2. I need more than just electronic noises.

3. I think there’s not any real talent

4. I’m not really into the “rave” scene

Yeah, yeah, yeah… You know you’ve heard of dubstep. It’s in commercials, it’s in popular songs (See: Britney Spears – Hold It Against Me) and it’s on everyone’s iPod.

So how do you define dubstep? What separates it from electronic, house or even pop music?

My definition: Dubstep is a garage baby formed by techno, drum and bass, electro and dub. The result? (Allmusic.com sums up perfectly) “Tense, almost oppressively dark sound… built on tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals”

The scene is spreading like wild fire. Dubstep gives a new light to music, something original and unique that sounds like nothing else you’ve heard before (imagine seeing a new color).

However, the “I Hate You” ’s listed above can be proven false. The overlapping beats? Yeah, hard to get sometimes. Identify the beats as separate sounds, and let yourself give in. Just because its not the norm doesn’t mean it’s not good. The electronic noises are samples of others music, so technically, yes, they’re electronic, but they came from instruments at some point. The talent is found within the work; music production is not an easy task, and creating one of a kind noises take time too. DJ’s take one noise and make it into a completely different sound. Can anyone walk off the street and do that? No, it takes time. And the rave scene… Kandi Kids, girls in tutu’s, kids on plethoric amounts of drugs… intense, I know. But just because you listen to the music doesn’t necessarily mean you need to go to raves. Plus, just because there are crazies there doesn’t mean you need to be one of them.

Remember people, keep an open mind. (:

Album Review: The Family Sign

When going through hip-hop albums of the past, one name is bound to pop up. The independent hip-hop group known as Atmosphere has been a forefather to rappers, lyricists and poets alike. Atmosphere is comprised of Ant, also known as Anthony Davis, (left) and Slug or Sean Daley (left center). However they tour with Nate Collins on guitar (center right) and Erick Anderson on keys (right).

Ant’s production skills are forever eminent and remain to keep things fresh and different. Erick Anderson and Nate Collins add an instrumental and almost bluesy feel within each song, much different than the typical straight drum and snare pattern. CoS describes the new sound as "mellow tones ... get buried between trip-hop and occasional bursts of electric blues guitar". What does keep consistent is the content. Slug’s rhymes are more like powerful stories that speak with brutal honesty about everything from heart wrenching lost loves to the hip-hop scene and the repercussions that come with it. The band also stays true to their values. LA Music Blog commented, “every album they have dropped has been different from its predecessor in nearly all aspects, yet they have remained thoroughly consistent with who they are and what they represent”.

And because of this, the fans keep coming back for more.

The Family Sign was released April 12 of this year, and so far almost all reviews have been positive. Being the giant Atmosphere fan that I am I downloaded the album and have been picking each song apart gradually.

Track List

1. My Key – A shout-out to his family including but not limited to the father of his child, his son, his mother, his father, and his girlfriend. Super mellow beat, beautiful guitar and bass lines. Metaphors are deep, provocative and new.

Dope quote – “Guess that it means if my people hurt / Somebody, please disturb my peaceful smirk / Take everything that I bring with me / Make who I be now / Hear my family now”

2. The Last To Say – A brutal story telling of domestic violence that will give you goosebumps and make your eyes turn foggy. LA Music Blog says that this song “noticeably stands out from the rest of the impressive 14-track album and paints an ugly picture in a beautiful manner, depicting a story of domestic violence that has heavily impacted a witnessing child.” No drums in this song, but Slug can give a hip hop beat to the eerie guitar and piano.

Dope quote – “Just tear it all apart and build new / Cause if you don't kill him, he's gonna kill you / You can't hold hands when they make fists / And I aint the first to say this.”

3. Became – When I heard the intro it made me remember my ballet classes. Classical music until Slug’s raspy and deep voice pops in. A classic story telling piece again. For fans of “Always Coming Back Home To You”, this is a piece for you. The story talks about two wolfs that are following someone. The wolves are obvious metaphors for something or someone, but I need to continue to break this song. It’s one of those multiple metaphor songs. (No YouTube link for this one! Sorry!)

Dope quote – “I read the trail your feet made, each step was deliberately placed. It looks like you know where it leads but I see nothing but leafless frozen trees.”

4. Just For Show – Ant obviously makes use of DJ experience in this song, using more electronic sounds to make this beat rock. This is a song that makes your body rock and the chorus is sexy. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true. Slug sings, his voice drops when the beat does. The song is about a girl, of course, but instead of angriness (See: Fuck You, Lucy) it’s more of a grown up fight. He shows maturation because he isn’t bitter, just stating that he can be fine without her.

Dope quote – “It's no sweat at all na I won't stress about / Anything projected out of your passive agressive mouth / Let it out, if we walking on a separate ground

5. She’s Enough – Another rad guitar song courtesy of Nate Collins. Another song for his girl, obviously. But as opposed to a happy love song or an angry love song, this song is more respectful. Instead of whining about the girl, Slug tells about how strong and beautiful she is to him.

Dope quote - She wanna do the damn thing and I'm on her side / she opened up the wings and she gonna fly / she got no time for the fuss and fight / she does it right, she loves her life”

6. Bad Bad Daddy – Honestly, this song has a cool beat, but the chorus is lame. He repeats, “I’m a bad bad daddy” over and over, and makes me think of a cheesy porno before my idol, Slug. Slug basically just bashes himself for not being a better father. Kind of lame in my opinion. No dope quote, I can’t find one.

7. Millennium Dodo – Another awesome story by Slug intermingled with self-deprecating explanations for his habits. The beat has various tones of “dings” and classic bass lines. My favorite part of this song is the shout out to the late and great Eyedea (Michael Larsen). The bridge of this song has a sexy beat as well (maybe Slug just gives me butterflies). Slug’s singing paired with a slow and but dope beat makes me want to move! (No YouTube link for this one! Sorry!)

Dope quote – “I only claim whats in my veins / That's my crown and that's my name / Gotta wait till they slash the price / Before you catch a life”

8. Who I’ll Never Be – My favorite song from this album. Unplugged and raw, this song is a beautiful piece about a girl who writes songs on the guitar about him. Definite chills every time I listen to this song. It truly is beautiful and the guitar really showcases Nate Collins’ guitar skill. It was really hard to choose a dope quote, so you should listen to the whole song. Please excuse how long this quote is. (No YouTube link for this one! Sorry!)

Dope quote – “She picked up her instrument / and I don't know where I went. / I just close my eyes and float / like I'm in there with her tryin' to hold all / the notes she hits, motionless, / a secret solo show she gives. / Sometimes she'll search for a line / and I wish I could give her one of mine. / But it would all unravel / if she found out I was in the shadows. / So I suppress what I obsess, / but your biggest fan wanna sing a duet.”

9. I Don’t Need Brighter Days – Slug opens this song with beautiful singing. Who knew his singing voice was actually really good? This song is bluesy and features a lot of echo use (don’t know how I feel about it). The song is full of strange little phrases, but somehow they all work together and make a cohesive story.

Dope quote – “They say brave when you don't flinch / But we never saw the blade, never had the chance to cringe / Don't ever forget to put misery on the guest list / Sippin' on a memory for breakfast

10. Ain’t Nobody – This song features a more pronounced drum beat and upbeat twang of the guitar and piano. However, the song feels forced, and not as original and memorable as Atmosphere’s past songs. (No YouTube link for this one! Sorry!)

Dope quote – “But if I walk away you'll blame it on my arrogance. / Let's make this clear, I'm not your therapist. / There is no interest in hearing about your carelessness.”

11. Your Name Here – The song is supposed to be like Slug is talking to a friend from the past. Hip Hop DX made a good point, relating this song to The Loser Wins off of their most recent EP To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy. “Whereas the latter was an angry conversation about learning when to cut ties with friends, the former takes place years later, where Slug runs into the aforementioned friend and has had time to cool off from the emotion of the situation.”

Dope quote – “It was a special surprise to bump into you / Stay safe! You have yourself a great day! / Wait, what was that? What'd you say? / My phone number? Nah I don't think so. / I only gave it to a handful of close people / Let's not make this into an issue, / But the truth is, I don't miss you.”

12. If You Can Save Me Now – More story telling! This song is about someone in what seems to be in a car accident recalling the life they made with a person they were with at the time. It flashes back to different periods of time that were memorable. (No YouTube link for this one! Sorry!)

Dope quote – “We all got scars and broken parts. / But most of the marks stay close to my heart. / Waitin' for the down-poor to start. / The rain clouds over my head got dark.”

13. Something So – Slug sings again for us in this song! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. This song is about being on tour and missing family, friends and loved ones. This song is the perfect ending for this album.

Dope quote – “We only get to live one time, but twice did my life stand in some sunshine. / I could lose eyesight, I could end up blind. / But I drew my design inside the bloodline. / Years go by, memories combine. / But y'all the only reason I would even rewind. / Thank you for the branch you grew on this tree.”

I love Atmosphere, so I'm pretty down with this album. However, Bad Bad Daddy is a crappy song. What's strange is that no one who has written an album review has said one bad thing about this album (in particular, that song). Maybe it's just me.

Overall, this album is the grown up Atmosphere, and I feel it's appropriate as many of the listeners are growing up as well.

What are your thoughts on the album?

Festival Watch - Lollapalooza 2011

Lollapalooza is an event that all live music chasers want to check out this year. The 20-year-old festival already has nearly 100 artists lined up and the number of awesome artists this year will blow your mind.

Headliners include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse and My Morning Jacket. Despite the top 40 lineup, others are unimpressed. The masses were hoping for a lineup that pushed boundaries, not one that was mainstream. IFC comments, “Farrell announced a lineup Tuesday that reads mostly like an abbreviated, milquetoast Top 40 playlist, surrounded by a passé flock of buzz bands.” Rolling Stone comments on part of the festival worth seeing that isn’t mainstream. “In addition to the main stage events, Lollapalooza 2011 will feature the debut of a 15,000-capacity dance tent that will host performances by Girl Talk, Kid Cudi, Pretty Lights and Skrillex. Festival founder Perry Farrell will also play on that stage as part of a PerryEtty Vs. Chris Cox set.” Some of the most exciting artists are not as big in text as the previously stated musicians.

A couple of personal favorites

  1. Atmosphere – Independent, (kind of) underground, hip-hop group, now on a nationwide tour… Amazing stage presence, fun to watch and this blogger’s favorite artist of all time.
  2. Beats Antique – A blend of electronica and world music with live music incorporated with new technology. Definite band to watch.
  3. Bright Eyes – Starring lyrical genius Conor Oberst. A band most well known for their heart wrenching songwriting.
  4. Cage The Elephant – Funk, punk, blues and rock in a glass on ice, cool and hot all at once.
  5. Cold War Kids – A new wave blues-rock featuring amazing vocals with a deep and intimate storytelling.
  6. Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas – Reggae and rap duo with an energetic stage presence. Their music has catchy, fun and truthful lyrics that can speak to everyone.
  7. Deadmau5 – This electronic and house DJ makes awesome music, but he’s kind of a snitch. Rusko, a dubstep DJ, was smoking marijuana backstage and Deadmau5 told security. Check out the beef here.
  8. Ratatat – An electronic and instrumental duo that uses new and different technology to create cool and fun beats.
  9. Girl Talk – Mash up extraordinaire & fun and fresh DJ. A plethora of samples never sounded so good.
  10. Pretty Lights – Mellow electronic music with funky beats. Performances include trippy, bright and fast lights, hence the name.
  11. Skrillex – Dubstep, drum n bass and electro-house DJ notorious for badass and loud beats. Think womp womp and computer noises that pair like nothing you’ve heard before… seriously it’s like seeing a color you don’t recognize.
  12. Sleigh Bells – “American noise pop music duo”, according to Lollapalooza. Fun, loud music that you can really dance to.
  13. Super Mash Bros. – Another mash up group that always brings the party whether it be through music, videos or computers.
  14. Glitch Mob – An electronic music group whose sound is so unique that “can only be described by referencing the Glitch Mob name”.

The festival will be held on August 5-7 at Chicago’s Grant Park.

Remembering a Legend

It’s been about 7 months since the late and great rapper and artist, Micheal Larsen, also known as Eyedea, passed away. While the hip-hop community continues to mourn the loss of this gifted prodigy, his career starts to pick up. Larsen was in multiple hip-hop groups besides his solo career, about seven, not to mention the uncountable songs and albums he has been featured on. He was part of an independent hip-hop label known as Rhymesayers Entertainment which features artists such as Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Grieves and MF Doom. Larsen is best known for his work in Eyedea in Abilities where he is a vocalist and DJ Abilities, Gregory Keltgen, but the new album comes from a different group. The group known as Face Candy was comprised of Larsen, Kristoff Krane, Casey O’Brien and JT Bates, 4 close friends from the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The new album, Waste Age Teen Land is the band’s second album, and was finished before Larsen died this last October. The album was recorded in studio for 2 days and one night in front of a café. Micheal Larsen’s website states, “the album showcases the band’s full spectrum of talents—from contemplative instrumentals to auto-tuned joke rapping, and every shade in between.” Waste Age Teen Land goes in stores on May 24; pre-orders are available on fifthelementonline.com

However, this isn’t the only feat that Larsen has accomplished since he passed; Larsen also has 2 poetry books that his grandmother compiled, some from his songs and some from poetry he has written for her. The books are crude, simple and at the same time, beautiful. I’ve been privileged to read his first release, Am I Wonderful? The book was full of the twisted, sad and brilliant poetry that anyone could identify as Larsen’s. The poetry by his grandma however were mournful and repetitive. Both books were homemade books; typed, printed, colored with crayons, folded, and stapled together. The books acted as a fundraiser for Larsen’s funeral.

However one question still arises, how did Larsen really die? When his mother announced that he had died on October 16, 2010, his fans were shocked and demanded answers, but neither family nor Rhymesayers would release the autopsy reports to the press. Larsen had a fairly well known drug addiction, which would tend to present itself in his songs and poetry. However, the fans seem to concede in not knowing the cause of death; sometimes it’s okay to not know for sure, out of respect for his family and for him,

His rhymes were sad, his depression was obvious, but the beauty and emotion within his lyrics could inspire anyone. You’ll just have to listen.

"Winter takes the warm away

Spring takes the cold away

Summer takes the rain away

And Fall took away my friend"
